For 37 years the Sunshine Factory has made New Hope its home on Rockford Road. By the end of the year the bar/restaurant could bring its rich history about 3 miles down the road and into Plymouth.
Owner Randy Rosengren said they have submitted their application to the city of Plymouth and are already well into the design phase for the new location, which would be at 4100 Vinewood Lane in Plymouth, near Rockford Road and 494. Wilkus Architects is working on the design plans.
If everything goes well, Rosengren said the plan would be to demolish the current building on Vinewood Lane and start construction, which would take five to six months.
Rosengren said the restaurant's lease in New Hope was up for renewal in June 2014, but they couldn't come to an agreement with the property owner.
"Once that discussion had taken place, it became pretty simple, the options were two - one was to close after all this time and the other was to relocate. We chose relocation," he said. "It's been a successful operation and one we want to continue."
Because of its lengthy history, Rosengren said the Sunshine Factory has a loyal customer base, so he didn't want to move too far away from its current location, at 7600 42nd Ave. N. in New Hope.
At first Rosengren said some of his loyal customers were distressed to hear they would be moving.
"Thirty-seven years you know, we're almost a generational business for some of these people," he said. "I won't tell you that there hasn't been some disappointment registered because there has. It's bittersweet for me too."
Now that he is able to tell his customers where they are going and that it's only 3.5 miles down the road, Rosengren said the customers seem to be supportive.
Not only did he want the new location to be close and convenient for the customers, but also for Rosengren's 110 employees.
"We have a 37-year history in that area, our brand and our identity are well-known there and obviously the further that we moved from that location, the less value that would all have," he said.
The new location, slated for 4100 Vinewood Lane, where Peony China Bistro is currently located, may turn out to be a good fit for the Sunshine Factory.
"Retail was important to us as well as general traffic and activity. That led us to the location that we've decided upon," Rosengren said.
The owner of Peony was unavailable for comment by the time this edition went to press.
