Last weekend the Westonka Library in Mound welcomed a few new furry friends - three therapy dogs.
The dogs came in as part of the Paws to Read program at the library. Westonka Library has been hosting the Paws to Read program for a number of years.
Volunteers from North Star Therapy Animals bring in therapy animals to libraries around the metro to help put young readers at ease. Therapy animals include dogs, cats, Guinea pigs and rabbits. Monday, December 9, 2013
Steven Dietz's "Rancho Mirage" is a coup for a theater trying to carve out a new identity with new owners and artistic leads. Dietz is a major American playwright and nabbing a regional premiere illustrates the Old Log's fresh face.
None of that would be worth a hill of beans if the production itself didn't sing from beginning to end. A sextet of talented Twin Cities actors, most making Old Log debuts, take the harsh, brittle and often very funny script and run with it from beginning to end in a sharp, quickly-paced piece. During Wynn Johnson freshman year of high school, he won a writing contest. Johnson is an avid reader, powering through more than 30 books a year, though he has never been a writer - until now. Oct. 1 marked the release of Johnson's memoir, "An Angel Is Born: A Family's Story."
While the story features many tragedies that Johnson has played witness to during his life, the story focuses on Wynn's niece, Angel Rose Skiles, who was born in 1972 with Rubinstein-Taybi Syndrome (RSTS), a mental disability. Angel also developed progeria, also known as rapid aging, and suffered from numerous seizures. Monday, October 28, 2013
After a warm September, October has finally given way to all that is autumn; the crisp autumn air, cooler weather, crazy long lines at Starbucks or Caribou, and, of course, the yellow, orange and red leaves falling from the trees that are characteristic of the changing season.
According to the Minnesota State Department of Natural Resources, the western metro area is experiencing between 40 and 60 percent of peak color, indicating that the best time to experience fall colors in this area would be late September to mid October, and in many cases, late into the month. With Halloween costume parties coming up, you probably have a certain image that comes to mind when you hear the term "pirate." You may picture a man with a peg leg, an eye patch, a parrot on his shoulder, and he may even let out a raspy "ARRR!"
But these types of pirates are long gone. However, in the film "Captain Phillips," we learn that pirates are still very real. Monday, October 14, 2013
Keith Rice has a strong personal tie to "Fiddler on the Roof."
Nearly 30 years ago, he played young revolutionary Perchik in a production.
"It was during that show I decided to pop the question to my wife. This show had an affect on me 30 years ago and it is having a huge affect on me now. It's all about family, faith and love," said Rice, who plays Tevye in Chanhassen Dinner Theatres' new production of the classic American musical. Monday, September 30, 2013
There is little doubt that a change of the seasons is upon us. For me, fall is one of my favorite times of the year. It's when I can wrap myself in a comfy blue sweater given in love, sit outside sipping hot cocoa with a dash of Irish whiskey (OK, maybe a bit more than a dash) while taking in the smells and sights of a season of change.
